Clinical psychologist, Founder of CBT East

Shari r. Kohn, PhD

I graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where I majored in Psychology, and went on to receive my PhD from SUNY Stony Brook, where I specialized in Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) and couples therapy, creating a premarital education program still being implemented today. Upon completion of my internship at Montefiore Medical Center, I was hired to direct the Anxiety and Depression Clinic, where I continued my clinical work with patients, supervised new interns and residents, taught CBT to medical residents, participated in clinical trials, gave talks around the country on sleep hygiene, conducted neuropsychological evaluations on the inpatient unit, and was trained in and worked as a clinician for the Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) clinic. After having my children, I decided to focus on my private practice while continuing my trainings in the Psychology of Nutrition, Mindfulness Based CBT (MBCBT), Somatic interventions, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Emotional Focused Therapy (EFT), and other interventions based on attachment theory. I supervised graduate students at Ferkauf, the PsyD program at Yeshiva University where I was an Associate Professor. I believe there is no one size fits all intervention, and therefore incorporate many modalities based on the needs of my client, meeting them where they are at. I encourage texting, voice notes and emailing between sessions, as I believe much of the work happens out of session and if I am not there to help, guide, remind, or just listen so I am better prepared for the next session, I will not be as beneficial for my clients. I personally consult with each clinical member of my practice on a consistent basis, and am behind the scenes on every client in our practice, including those seeking evaluations. I do this by choice as every CBT East clinician is licensed and incredible to work with, I just enjoy consultation and believe two minds can be better than one. When I’m not engaged in clinical or administrative work, you can find me practicing mindfulness, spending time with my family and friends, working out, eating healthy, learning golf, listening to podcasts and audiobooks, learning new skills, taking care of myself and others I care about, getting fresh air, and doing all I can to be present and enjoy the moment.

I graduated from University of Michigan where I majored in Psychology and minored in Community Action and Social Change through the School of Social Work. I received my Master’s in Professional School Psychology from Fordham University, where I completed practicum sites with a neuropsychiatrist, a special education school in NYC, and a preschool for children with developmental delays. After passing my certification exam I began working at a private school in the Bronx, and currently, in addition to CBT East, I am a school psychologist at a public high school in New Jersey. At CBT East, I specialize in psychoeducational and clinical assessments. Additionally, I see clients virtually and specialize in working with individuals with anxiety, ADHD, trauma, and executive functioning disorder. l also consult with school districts and universities to help our clients receive appropriate accommodations, make recommendations for and attend  504 and IEP meetings, and offer consultations for appropriate schools to attend. I incorporate humor and a client-centered approach to treatment. During my free time I like to read, spend time with friends and family, and hang out with my French bulldog, Hugo.

Hillary schier, lmsw, mba

I graduated from Binghamton University where I studied Psychology and Graphic Design and later obtained my MBA. Throughout all of my professional experiences, I found my passion truly lied in working with people, so I pursued and obtained my Master’s in Social Work from Hunter College. Throughout my time at Hunter, I interned with Brooklyn College students, helping them to navigate life transitions, assist in identity formation and improve their executive functioning skills. I then interned for the Jewish Board of Clinical and Family Services where I worked with a range of clients dealing with eating disorders, interpersonal conflicts, personality disorders, anxiety, and depression. Following graduation, I joined CBT East while also working as a Renal Social Worker. I believe that every person has unique needs and requires individualized interventions. I like to engage clients both in and out of session for real-time intervention and to involve client’s supports such as family members, partners, etc. to best meet their needs. I work with clients experiencing generalized anxiety, depression, eating disorders, chronic illness, executive functioning disorders, grief, climate anxiety and more. I have a passion for creativity and try to incorporate it into my work wherever beneficial for a client. When I am not working, I love to explore NYC and spend time with my friends, family and dogs!

Marnie Cohen, LMSW, MSed

I graduated from Adelphi University, where I received my Master’s in Social Work. As a therapist, my primary goal is to create a safe and supportive environment where individuals can explore their thoughts, feelings, and experiences without judgment. With a compassionate and empathetic approach, I strive to help clients gain insight into their challenges, develop coping skills, and make positive changes in their lives. As a clinician who transitioned from a career as a special education teacher while raising three children, I bring a wealth of experience, empathy, and understanding to my work. While I enjoyed my time teaching, I had a desire to help more individuals and families in need, and so I pursued my Master’s degree in social work. I have worked with children and adults who have faced a wide range of issues including anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship difficulties, and life transitions. I am dedicated to fostering a collaborative therapeutic relationship where clients feel empowered to explore their strengths and work towards their goals. I practice using an eclectic and integrative approach which includes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Psychodynamic Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and Solution-Focused Therapy. When I am not working or spending time with family and friends, I make an effort to focus on my physical and mental well being.  Whether it's taking my dog for a long walk, doing pilates, or reading a good book, I prioritize activities that promote wellness. I find that these activities are essential for recharging, staying grounded, and maintaining a positive work-life balance.

Mikela (Mikki) Wolf, LCSW

I graduated from Syracuse University where I double majored in Psychology and Human Development. I received my Master’s in Social Work from New York University, during which time I interned with Dr. Shari Kohn at CBT East as well as Parallax Center, an outpatient detox and continuing care center. After graduation I passed my licensing exam, and continued working with Shari as well as Parallax, where I worked toward my CASAC, a certification in addiction interventions. I now work full time at CBT East, specializing in treating anxiety, depression, addiction, and executive functioning disorder in children, adolescents and adults. I incorporate technology and worksheets, and curate each intervention to the specific needs of each individual. Following the principles of CBT East, I believe in accountability and applying what we do in session to real world experiences, and I feel this can happen best with consistent communication between sessions, which I encourage. I welcome each of my clients the opportunity to stay accountable via email, texting and voice notes, and have found it to be tremendously beneficial. Outside of work I enjoy taking workout classes, playing pickleball, skiing, taking my dog Glade for walks in Central Park, and spending time with my family and friends.

I graduated from LIU Post with a criminal justice major, and returned there to receive my Master’s in Social Work. I interned with Dr. Kohn during this time, as well as at two local town agencies. The first was at Project Excel - a free program for kids within the town for academic and social development as well as post high school career planning. I then interned at a non intensive outpatient substance abuse facility under OASAS where I worked with individuals and led several groups focused on educating, processing, and creating a community within which clients could achieve long term sobriety. The vast majority of these clients were court mandated, which taught me a great deal about dealing with resistance and motivating clients to reach their goals. At CBT East, I specialize in helping adults and young adults cope with and overcome anxiety, depression, OCD, and many other ailments and life stressors. My goal as a clinician is to empower my clients and equip them with the necessary tools to handle these situations throughout the week, with the knowledge that I am always just a text away between our sessions. Outside of work I enjoy playing tennis with my friends, practicing photography, watching Formula 1, and going for mindful walks.
